A Theology of Ministry for the Laity and Women: Edward Schillebeeckx’ Sacramental Theology for the Church Today

My project aims at making a synthesis of Schillebeeckx’s sacramental theology and his theology of ministry, which has yet to receive scholarly attention. The primary objective of this research is to understand the sacramental differences between the clergy and the laity as explained by Schillebeeckx. Then, the project will also explore the reception of Schillebeeckx’s theology of sacraments and ministry by women theologians, in order to understand how his theology has been critically received in contemporary theology, and how, according to these scholars, his work could form a contribution to current debates on women and lay participation in the Church today. Furthermore, the study aims in a broader sense to deeply understand the already founded and developed theology of the Church and of the laity aiming to discern practical applications within the specific context of the Church communities in Kerala.

Why this topic matters to me

This work holds significant importance for several reasons. Firstly, it addresses a gap in scholarly research by synthesizing Schillebeeckx’s sacramental theology and theology of ministry, offering new insights into the distinctions between clergy and laity. Understanding these distinctions is crucial for anyone invested in ecclesiology and the functioning of the Church.

Moreover, by exploring the reception of Schillebeeckx’s theology by women theologians, the research sheds light on contemporary debates about women's roles and lay participation in the Church. This is particularly relevant in today's context, where discussions about gender equality and inclusive practices within religious institutions are gaining momentum.

Finally, the study's focus on practical applications within Church communities in Kerala makes it directly relevant for those involved in or concerned with these communities. It aims to provide actionable insights that can enhance the engagement and participation of the laity, thereby strengthening the Church’s communal and spiritual life.

In summary, this work matters because it bridges a scholarly gap, contributes to ongoing theological debates, and offers practical benefits for specific Church communities, making it a valuable endeavor for anyone interested in the future of Church ministry and participation.
